The Lorient Yawl

As part of the Mini Brittany fest 2022, a yawl boat from Lorient is part of the fest in Galway for a week, sailing in the bay and around the docks with the Claddagh Boats. This yawl boat is an exact replica from 1796, initially built by Kenan Jaouen. Several people and youth groups (Sea Scouts and French kids from FLAM Galway) were able to meet the crew and discover the structure of the yawl boat.

This yawl replica is also an historical reminder of how french troops would have landed in Ireland in 1798 following the request for help from Wolfe Tone. The sailing in Galway by Wolf Tone bridge is a nice way to honor that part of Franco-Irish history.

We wish to thank the Galway Sailing Club, the Port of Galway and the Galway Claddagh boats and skippers, and Galway West End for their help to welcome this beautiful yawl.
